Contact usMyriad handles R&D tax relief claims for UK businesses from initial eligibility review through to HMRC submission and full audit defence. Find out how our process works and what you'll pay.
R&D tax relief is one of the more valuable HMRC incentives available to UK businesses, but a significant number of companies are underclaiming or not claiming at all. The rules are detailed, the documentation requirements are considerable, and HMRC scrutiny has increased markedly over the past few years, meaning more time spent on your claim upfront.
Myriad works with UK businesses to build claims that are accurate, well-evidenced, and built to withstand challenge, all while minimising the time and effort you need to spend on your claim.
No two claims are identical, but every engagement follows the same disciplined structure. Here is what the process looks like in practice.
Before any work begins, we carry out a thorough review of your business activities. This means understanding your projects in detail: what you set out to achieve, where the technical uncertainty lay, and whether the work meets HMRC's definition of qualifying R&D.
Getting this stage right shapes every decision that follows, from which costs are included to how the technical narrative is framed. Overstating scope is as much of a risk as understating it; precision here is what protects you later.
We also ensure that any necessary forms are submitted at this stage; the Advance Notification Form (ANF), or claim notification form, is a new requirement for companies claiming for the first time or who haven’t in the last three years. Our team makes sure you don’t fall at the first hurdle.
HMRC's technical requirements for R&D claims have grown more exacting in recent years. A well-constructed technical report doesn't simply describe what your team did; it demonstrates how the work addresses scientific or technological uncertainty in terms that satisfy the criteria set out in HMRC's guidelines.
We interview your technical staff directly: engineers, developers, scientists, and project leads. Our specialists then translate those conversations into documentation that is clear, specific, and defensible. That last quality matters most if HMRC opens a compliance check.
Technical and financial work run in parallel. Our cost associates analyse your expenditure, identify which costs qualify, and apply the correct apportionments across staff time, subcontractor involvement, consumables, and other eligible categories.
We keep detailed records of every calculation and apportionment. This isn't merely good practice; it is what allows your claim to stand up if HMRC asks questions about the numbers.
Our in-house qualified accountants ensure your claim is submitted correctly as part of your Company Tax Return (CT600). Our involvement means your R&D claim is consistent with the rest of your tax filing, with no gaps or contradictions that could attract unnecessary scrutiny.
We also prepare the Additional Information Form, a crucial part of your claim, and follow up with HMRC post-submission if any unexpected delays surface.
Our service covers the full scope of the claim process, from initial assessment through to post-submission support.
The core deliverable is a complete R&D claim report. This covers project discovery across your entire qualifying programme, technical scoping and report preparation, qualifying cost review and detailed cost schedules, and staff and subcontractor time analysis.
Beyond the report itself, we handle the procedural requirements HMRC introduced in 2023: the claim notification form for eligible new claimants, and the additional information form required for all claims. These procedural steps catch some businesses off guard; we ensure they are addressed correctly from the outset.
Post-submission, we maintain contact with HMRC on your behalf and respond to any queries that arise during their review. If HMRC opens a compliance check, we provide full support at no additional charge. We have backed clients with short clarificatory notes to HMRC all the way to tax tribunal. If your claim is eventually rejected, we refund our fees and even contribute to your time and resources spent.
Transparency on cost is something we take seriously. Our fee structure is straightforward: a tiered percentage of the benefit you receive from HMRC, which means our interests are directly aligned with getting the right result for your business. Our percentage fees start at 15% and decrease in proportion as your claim increases.
For full details on our pricing tiers, visit our R&D tax relief pricing page.
Payment is timed to HMRC's expected processing schedule, so you are not covering our fees before the credit or repayment is expected to arrive. Whether you are a first-time claimant or have an established R&D programme, the structure is the same.
Every claim Myriad submits comes with three layers of protection.
Full HMRC Enquiry Defence. If HMRC opens a compliance check at any point, we manage the process in full: drafting correspondence, providing technical and financial justifications, and defending the basis of the claim with the same rigour applied when preparing it. There is no additional charge for this.
Fee Refund Guarantee. In the event that a claim is rejected, we refund our fees. We are confident enough in the quality of our work to stand behind it financially. We even contribute to your time and resources spent on the compliance check.
Penalty Cover. On the rare occasion that HMRC imposes a penalty in connection with an R&D claim, we cover it. This outcome is exceptionally uncommon given our track record, but the protection is in place regardless.
The pace of a claim is almost always determined by your team's availability rather than ours. We have turned claims around in under a week when circumstances required it, and we have worked with clients over several months when that better suited their situation.
What we won't do is allow a timing choice to become a missed deadline. HMRC's submission windows are fixed, and missing them means forgoing a legitimate benefit.
Myriad’s track record is nothing short of exemplary; our proven success rates lead the industry. That result reflects a consistent approach: careful scoping at the outset, thorough documentation, conservative calculation where judgement calls are required, and a precise understanding of what HMRC's compliance teams look for.
We work across a range of sectors: software development, engineering, life sciences, food and drink, construction technology, and advanced manufacturing, among others. The sector varies; the standard does not.
Not every business requires full consultancy support. For UK companies with smaller claim values, Tax Cloud offers a structured online alternative. You provide your project details through the platform, and the same specialist team that handles Myriad's full consultancy claims reviews your work, provides feedback and submits to HMRC on your behalf.
The result is a claim prepared to the same standard of quality and defensibility, at a lower cost. You can find out more about Tax Cloud's pricing on the Tax Cloud site.
The best starting point is a free consultation. In that call, we will review your business activities, give you an honest assessment of whether your work is likely to qualify, and outline what the process would look like for your specific situation.
